The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles, as over two million wildebeest, along with zebras and gazelles, surge across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. This epic journey spans Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park guided by seasonal rains and instinct. From January to March, thousands of calves are born in the southern Serengeti, while between July through October, herds face their most dangerous challenge: crossing crocodile-filled rivers like the Mara and Grumeti. Along the way, predators such as lions, hyenas, leopards, and cheetahs lie in wait, turning the migration into a constant fight for survival. Despite the dangers, this powerful movement of animals sustains the ecosystem. Grazing promotes new plant growth, dung enriches the soil, and the migration supports predators and biodiversity, keeping the Serengeti–Mara alive in a breathtaking cycle of life.
